McCaigs Folly, Oban Ardnamurcham Lighthouse Camas nan Geall Boats at Dalelia, Loch Shiel Tioram

A lovely drive from the site takes you to the point of Ardnamurchan which is the most Westerly point on Britain's mainland. On the point is Ardnamurchan lighthouse which was built in 1849 the Stevenson family. It is the only lighthouse in the world built in an Egyptian style. More details can be found at Ardnamurchan lighthouse.

On the same road heading towards the lighthouse is the Glenmore natural history centre. The centre also has a tearoom, together with a gift and book shop. More details at Glenmore natural history centre

Very close to the site is the Garbh Eilean Wildlife Hide. This gives an ideal opportunity to see some of the more elusive wildlife in the area such as otters and pine martens. The hide is rocky knoll on the shore of Loch Sunart within the native oakwood. A wide variety of birds are regularly spotted from the hide, and herons and common seals are almost always seen. The Independent newspaper included a local beach, Sanna bay, in its top 50 UK beaches. It is very secluded because of its location, with beautiful white sand. This beach could be visited as part of a drive to the Ardnamurchan lighthouse and Glenmore visitor centre.

Castle Tioram which is still spectacular despite being in ruins is a short drive away Loch Moidart. It is only possible to walk to the Castle at low tide across a narrow strip of land. It was in 1715 when the Clanranald Clan Chief burnt the castle down to prevent it falling into enemy hands when they left to fight for the Jacobite cause. There are lots of interesting details at the moidart.org website – click on Castle Tioram

A drive to Mallaig will take you past the small village of Glenuig. The public road was only made in 1966, and the village had to wait until 1983 for mains electricity. More details including events on at the community hall at Glenuig Home Page

The Glenfinnan monument, on the Fort William to Mallaig “road to the isles” marks the spot where "Bonnie Price Charlie" landed in a small boat to meet the MacDonalds and wait for the arrival of other supporters. At the site there is an interesting visitor centre, with a café and gift shop. Click on Glenfinnan monument

Loch Sunart Oakwoods are renowned as some of the largest in the country, supporting a very diverse range of plant, animal and birdlife. A partnership has been established to restore and expand the woodlands. This includes establishing some interesting and varied walks within the woodlands. Look at the Sunart Oakwoods website for more information.
